The process actualised by the future archive is to do with knowledge in the sense of "knowing ones knowledge” at a given point, knowing its situatedness and what one can do with it. Perceiving knowledge as a quite flexible and virtual playing field within which to manoeuvre and come to act, as opposed to conflating knowledge with pre-accumulated information or determinist factuality. The conversational format utilised by the project aims to establish spaces for sharing ideas and strategies in order for them to bring about new modes of questioning, imagining and knowing. The delineation of a discursive and epistemological field is the crucially difficult process at the basis of these conversations, which reveal knowledges as open and translatable bases for action and movement. http://futurearchive.org

re- and pre-enactments

I will be joining Manuela and Anja's discussion of the future archive, to briefly ask some questions about creative practices in relation to imagining possible futures,(( hopefully in a way that is relevant also to the future archive )). I would like to invite others to swap forms, approaches and practices of knowing. In particular, I am interested in practices that are embodied and shared.

My own examples come from working with BLW, an artist collective that develops workshops for the memorization and public recitation (re-speaking, re-enactment) of significant moments in the history of radical media in the US. BLW considers the role of media in radical practices: how do video recordings, or other new media, act as repository for memory and/or vehicle for interjection. what are the possibilities for speech in a culture where oral histories and oral competence are displaced by media forms. Can we, through an embodied recitation, give this act of “play back” a different outcome? We have recently also begun to develop participatory and public forms of “playing the future”, by helping to form the Philadelphia Coalition of Inquiry into the State of the Future. The Coalition's investigation utilizes the The Public Hearing as a form for recalling/summoning/conjuring the future.

interesting format to frame a discussion...
