Second History Lesson:
Re-education
Nora Sternfeld + Peter Grabher
What a history lesson could be for a perspective of the present.
They will present a period after the nazi breakdown.
Peter: historian
colelctive for screnning and discusion
politial cinema
he is at paris where he does phd in middle eaast
conflict in essay films.
showing 3 re-education films:
guided by questions and nazi education in this
context.
VHS tapes. apologize for bad quality.
context: two phases after may 1945
of re-education;
ph. 1: allied in their
german / austrian population
crimes commited in their name and in their support
atrocity films:
1. russian film
auschwiztz in aushwistz
2. germany awake.
approach harshly confronts their public with crimes
and facts and ends abruptly at beg on cold war
and end of nazification in summer 1946/47
then the project of re-education was changed
called re-orientation. --softer
and one film to rep this:
Fresh wind in old streets.
These are rare films
people in hamburg cinematec have
done archiving of these films.
intro of films:
article in the reader
site iand sound in 1942
conceived this project of re-education
film was a way to change minds, habits
to inform people
first major production must address:
the war guilt lies with the nazis
it must show the misseries of war
and false values of life
idea was to reintegreat populations that
have left the area of the civilized world.
the reason for war and nazism is to
be found in an authoritrian form
created by war ....
social psychological project behind
re-educating germany by film.
1st film is russian:
rilm cut and edited by ... Kioche group
since early 1920's.
"Kamps of Horror -- films you must see"
when these films came out
people were force to go see them in the cinema's.
people did not want to go
so the allied admin forced them to see them.
there are article in the news paper
that nazi prisoners were forced to see these films.
1st film run time was 20 minutes:
taxonomy of prison camps.
was in german (tone needs to be explained for
english speaking people)
2nd film begins with the swastica exploading.
(again in german)
showing destruction of koln, nurenburg, hamburg,
berlin,
Seen by german and austrian public with rejection.
the history of the production of these films
reflects the failure of re-education
--after nurenberg process-Film: Lesson of Nurenberg
Post-war society:
images in post-nazi socitey?
the films informed our imagination of the schwa(?)
filmmakers of the red army filmed in leberated camps. used images from a pool of film filmed
by different groups.
-collective database, repetition within films.

Edu-factory + Ephemera: Theory + Politics in Organization
project of 6 years.
for last 2 years, ephemera has opened a print on demand service called Mayflie books.
Mayflie= ephemera
2 questions:
1.
-use and abuse of university resources
-strategic relationship with university
2.
building and deeping our relations.
sept. measure for measure
a workshop on "value from below"
value is a way to deepen social
independencies (?)

Urgent thought saturday
/////military defeat of the west
and the end.... of empathy...
the problem is
impossible line of flight
what is the escape that is left to us
is the ability to suspend the relationship between "me"
and mankind
this is the lamise stake.
to be able to think to the abiity of singularities
of social singularities.
to escape the desiny of defeat which is already here.
a story about an idiot traveling-
the figures in dotsetoyvski
who are agitated
flees his burning house.
wants to search for help outside of the house
as his love is in the house
he goes and runs
and he goes down the stairs and meets
a dog or another person and completely
forgets the burning person back in thehouse.
...
this points to urgency...
this one urgency is meeting another urgency
delueze describes this as an idiot urgency
if there is a question of life or death
that can be interupted by another urgency..
then we cannot address these urgencies.
there is this idiot who cannot flee
question/comment session:
category of suspension:
seems to be a duality
btw two orders of suspension
(suspension of "non-time")
concept of organizing;
the precarious, migrants,
moving from stagnation to possiblitye,
risk...
how do all of these connect?
into contmeporary labor:
defeat and content.
precarity isn ot so much a form
of labor relations or social relation
but a way of patogenisis
of the perception of time
time more and more does not belong to you
anymore.
time is an endless sprawl
time can be picked up for a period, but
it does not belong to a person.
schisma(?) between a person and his time
a short story:
Jean Sanguy(?)
the guy of the virgina tech..
he read all the papers
(comparison of media..)
the whole page dedicated to the guy
with the guns .. images of his action
and his pathology
on the same page of an advertisement
by intel corporation. a woman with asiatic
face (maybe connection.. to korean... )
this woman was presenting fists and martial
arts and onthe right was very agressive
3 images...."intel for your multitasking for
productivity:...."
"multiply"
this is precarity...
Lisa speaking to dispair...
derrik jenson: the culture of make-believe
how do we deal with the pain of what is real?
response: you have to give up hope..
(derrik jenson)
speak to hope:?
